    SPEECH (TRANSCRIPT)
WARRAICH: (SEQ 10) "It was a pitiful scene. We could see all the villages razed to the ground. We landed at Darel (Phonetic). People were stunned. All buildings, schools, post offices, mosques, bazaars and all the houses were demolished. People were dazed and sitting outside with the wounded and the sick. Luckily, in the helicopter, I had taken Army doctors. I had taken some nursing assistants and a lot of medicine. We immediately got down with the treatment and those critical cases we loaded them in the helicopter and started the shuttle service."

    Background: NORTHERN VALLEYS, PAKISTAN

INTRODUCTION: The remote mountainous areas of northern Pakistan are constantly being hit by earthquakes. The desolated, isolated terrain which has the greatest concentration of high peaks in the world has experienced widespread tremors causing damage to life and property.Reports say more than 200 people were killed and about 2,000 injured when an earthquake struck recently and fresh tremors were experienced daily.

SYNOPSIS: One of the worst hit areas was the remote Chilas Valley. When the 'quake struck houses were reduced to rubble by an avalanche of boulders.Sixteen villages and their houses disappeared. To make matters worse the area was virtually cut off from the rest of the world..During bad weather the roads were blocked by boulders and flights were cancelled.Even army helicopters stop flying as they have difficulty in getting through the treacherous air currents which swirl around the mountains. The only road linking the area with Gilgit, the administrative headquarters, was blocked.Relief supplies had to be sent in by helicopters.President Zia has made four helicopters available and some 200 tents have reached the survivors.Rescue teams were continually finding more bodies in the devastated villages and casualty figures could double.

The centre of the relief operation is Gilgit where a special unit staffed by army doctors and orderlies has been set up at the hospital. They were treating 31 serious cases among them 10 children. Most were suffering from fractured bones, broken backs and head wounds.Relief workers who flew over the area after the earthquake had struck said it looked as if the valleys had been turned upside down.About 25,000 people live in the region and some rescue teams took more than a week to reach the more remote villages.

The difficulty of getting medical assistance to the scattered communities was acute.Medical teams estimated there were 1,000 needing assistance in the Darel Valley alone. They put in a request for a mobile surgery unit to be airlifted to the area.Meanwhile, relief agencies did their best to bring in supplies and distribute food.Man in charge of relief operations.General Imtiaz Warraich described the scene immediately after the earthquake had hit the region.
