  • Description

THE WORLD SKI CHAMPION, JEAN-CLAUDE KILLY, OF FRANCE, TODAY (SATURDAY) WON THE LAUBERHORN RACE - ONE OF THE TOUGHEST DOWNHILL COURSES IN THE EUROPEAN CIRCUIT. ANOTHER FRENCHMAN, LEO LACROIX WAS SECOND, AND JEAN-DANIEL DAETWYLER, OF SWITZERLAND, WAS THIRD.

NEARLY 100 COMPETITORS FROM 18 COUNTRIES, INCLUDING THE WORLD'S TOP SKIERS, ENTERED FOR TE EVENT - THE FIRST MAJOR DOWNHILL TEST OF THE SEASON.

WITH SNOW FALLING STEADILY, KILLY RACED DOWN THE COURSE OF MORE THAN TWO AND A HALF MILES (4.26 KMS) IN THREE MINUTES 6.76 SECONDS TO WIN BY POINT-29 SECONDS. THE TRACK HAD A VERTICAL DROP OF ABOUT 3,300 FEET (1,000 METRES).

KILLY'S VICTORY TODAY STRENGTHENED HIS LEAD IN THE NEW WORLD CUP COMPETITION TO DECIDE THE SEASON'S BEST SKIER. HE'S NOW GOT AN AGGREGATE OF 76 POINTS WHILE LACROIX IS SECOND WITH 51 POINTS.

THE LAUBERHORN RESULTS WERE A REPETITION OF FRANCE'S DOUBLE SUCCESS IN THE 1966 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AT PORTILLO IN CHILE: AGAIN IT WAS KILLY AND LACROIX.
