  • Description

AS THE 300 MEMBERS OF THE PRINCE OF WALES' OWN YORKSHIRE REGIMENT LEFT THEIR HEADQUARTERS AND TOOK UP POSITIONS THROUGHOUT RIOT-TORN LONDONDERRY TODAY (THURSDAY), GROUPS OF CATHOLICS BEHIND THE BOGSIDE DISTRICT BARRICADES CELEBRATED THE DEPARTURE OF THE ROYAL ULSTER CONSTABULARY (R.U.C.) AND THE SPECIAL POLICE RESERVISTS KNOWN AS "B-SPECIALS".

THE ARRIVAL OF THE STEEL-HELMETED TROOPS ARMED WITH AUTOMATIC RIFLES AND STEN GUNS HAS APPARENTLY BROUGHT A TEMPORARY EASING OF TENSION IN THE CITY AFTER THREE SUCCESSIVE DAYS OF DESTRUCTIVE RIOTING AND CLASHES BETWEEN MILITANT CATHOLIC AND PROTESTANT GROUPS.

MANY SOURCES BELIEVED THAT THE ARRIVAL OF BRITISH TROOPS WOULD ONLY AGGRAVATE THE SITUATION BY STIRRING UP OLD MEMORIES OF IRISH CIVILIAN RISINGS PUT DOWN BY BRITISH SOLDIERS FIFTY YEARS AGO DURING IRISH INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLES. IN SPITE OF THIS, BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON TOOK THE DECISIONS OF SENDING IN THE TROOPS YESTERDAY. AS THE INFANTRYMEN TOOK UP THEIR POSITIONS IN LONDONDERRY AND THE R.U.C. TOOK THEIR FIRST BREAK SINCE THE TROUBLES STARTED, THE CATHOLIC SIDE AT LEAST APPARENTLY TOOK THEIR ARRIVAL WELL AND LARGE GROUPS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS CHEERING AND CHANTING IN CELEBRATION OF THE DEPARTURE OF THE POLICE FORCES.

THE RELAXATION OF TENSION, HOWEVER, IS UNEASY. PROTESTANT GROUPS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BARRICADES HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO BE THREATENING TO "INVADE" THE CATHOLIC AREA OF BOGSIDE AGAIN - AND THE BOGSIDE RESIDENTS THEMSELVES HAVE NOT STOPPED COLLECTING EMPTY BOTTLES AND PREPARING PETROL BOMBS IN ANTICIPATION OF FUTURE LOTION.

IN THE MEANTIME, THE VIOLENCE HAS BEGUN TO SPREAD TO OTHER PARTS OF NORTHERN IRELAND. AND ALREADY FIVE PERSONS HAVE BEEN REPORTED KILLED BY GUNFIRE IN ARMAGH AND BELFAST.
