    EARLIER, THE ORAN MUNICIPAL COUNCIL THREATENED TO RESIGN UNLESS MEASURES WERE TAKEN TO RESTORE ORDER IN THE CITY.THEY CALLED FOR MORE TROOPS AND POLICE.M.LOUIS JOXE, MINISTER FOR ALGERIAN AFFAIRS, HAS PROMISED M.FOUQUES DUPARC, MAYOR OF ORAN, AND A DELEGATION, THAT REINFORCEMENTS WILL BE SENT.THE PREFECT OF THE ORAN DEPARTMENT, M.ANDRIEUX, HAS SAID THE "INFERNAL CYCLE" OF VIOLENCE BETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES, EUROPEAN AND MOSLEM, IN THE CITY, WAS LEADING INEVITABLY TOWARDS CIVIL WAR.

    ON JANUARY 7, OAS SUSPECTS, MANY OF THEM STUDENTS AND YOUNG PROFESSIONAL MEN WHO HAVE BEEN INTERNED, WERE BROUGHT OUT INTO THE STREETS ON MUNICIPAL DUST CARTS TO COLLECT PILES OF GARBAGE.THE MOSLEM DUSTMEN HAVE FOR SOME DAYS REFUSED TO GO INTO THE EUROPEAN QUARTERS.
