  • Description

Congolese President, Commandant Marien Ngouabi, greeted Zairian President, General Mobutu Sese Seko, when he arrived in Brazzaville on Saturday (28 February) for peace talks with Angolan President Agostinho Neto.

The meeting was arranged with the help of President Ngouabi who met President Mobutu at the airport and acted as mediator between Zaire and Angola.

Zaire formerly backed opponents of Dr. Neto's Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

After their meeting the two presidents issued a communique that two movements which opposed the MPLA Angolan Government will have to leave Zaire immediately under a new agreement.

The two movements which will have to leave Zaire are the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). The FNLA had its headquarters in Kinshasa and UNITA had been supported by Zaire for the past year.

Both Zaire and Angola have also said that they will not allow military activity to be organised against one another from their respective territories.

The communique also said that Angolan refugees living in Zaire should return to their country of origin.
