    A POWERFUL SOVIET NAVAL SQUADRON ARRIVE IN PORT LOUIS, MAURITIUS LAST THURSDAY (3 APRIL). IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT SOVIET WARSHIPS HAD PAID AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE ISLAND.

    THE SQUADRON WAS COMPRISED OF THREE SHIPS. THE FLAGSHIP WAS THE GUIDED MISSILE CRUISER "ADMIRAL FOKIN", A 5,000 TON SHIP OF THE "KYNDA" CLASS. SHE'S ARMED WITH SURFACED-TO-SURFACE AND SURFACE-TO-AIR GUIDED MISSILES AND IS ONE OF THE NEWER SHIPS IN THE SOVIET NAVY. HER CONSORT WAS THE SMALLER GUIDED MISSILE DESTROYER "GNYEVNYI" OF 3,000 TONS. HER ARMAMENT CONSIST OF A SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSILE SYSTEM AND ANTI-SUBMARINE ROCKETS. THE OTHER SHIP IN THE SQUADRON WAS THE OILER "ALAKIR".

    THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR TO MAURITIUS, MR. ROSLAVTSEV WENT ABOARD THE FLAGSHIP AND WAS GREETED BY THE SQUADRON COMMANDER, CAPTAIN KOROSTELEV. HE INSPECTED A GUARD OF HONOUR.

    OTHER VISITORS INCLUDED THE CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. "MAURITIUS" AND THE DIRECTOR OF MARINE, CAPTAIN BOOKER. LATER, CAPTAIN KOROSTELEV ACCOMPANIED BY THE AMBASSADOR, CALLED ON THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL, THE PRIME MINISTER, THE CHIEF JUSTICE, AND THE MAYOR OF PORT LOUIS.

    THE SHIPS ARE ON A TRAINING CRUISE IN THE INDIAN OCEAN.
