  • Description

For the first time in its thirteen-year history, the Senegalese navy is to be commanded by a Senegalese-born officer. Previously, the navy has been under the charge of an officer seconded from the French navy, but this week, Captain Faye Gassama formally took charge of the maritime force.

The handover was completed at a ceremony on Wednesday (22 January) when several hundred men of the Senegalese navy watched while M. Cledor Sall handed over the flag of command to Captain Gassama, accompanied by a guard of honour.

The Minister, in a speech for the occasion, said that the Senegalese navy had a part to play on the international scene and was making a contribution to world detente.
