This was an historic meeting. Greece and Turkey became members of NATO. NATO was completely re-organised and the permanent North Atlantic Council set up with Lord Ismay, who attended the meeting with Eden as a UK representative, became the first Secretary General of the Organisation. Famous North American and European personalities were present such as Acheson, Pearson, Schuman, Eden, de Casperi etc. It was at this meeting also that the ministers accepted the re-armament of Germany within the framework of the Alliance and by means of the European Defence Community - the latter subsequently rejected by the French Parliament. The public opening session, at which Greece and Turkey were welcomed as new members, took place in the National Assembly which is to be the scene of the similar session in June.
These shots taken from a helicopter date from May this year and again contrast the old and the new. Lisbon was almost totally destroyed by an earthquake in the 1750's which accounts for the 18th century uniformity of the buildings and squares in the centre of the town (Comercio, Rossio and Independencia). The Portuguese are proud of the new Salazar Bridge which is the longest suspension bridge in Europe. The new monument to the explorers recalls their earlier voyages of discovery which opened up new worlds in America, Africa and Asia.
These are self-explanatory and are listed by subject rather than by shot. They highlight the contrast between the old (picturesque and traditional) and the new Portugal as exemplified by roads, hydro-electrics etc. The maritime tradition is a main feature of the Portuguese life.
