  • Description

A PAINTING BY THE FRENCH IMPRESSIONIST, CLAUDE MONET, WAS SOLD AT A CHRISTIE'S AUCTION IN LONDON TODAY (FRIDAY) FOR A WORLD RECORD GBP588,000. THE PAINTING, "LA TERRASSE A SAINTE ADRESSE", WENT TO AGNEW, A LONDON ARTS DEALER.

"LA TERRASSE" IS ONE OF THE FINEST IMPRESSIONIST WORKS TO COME UP FOR SALE SINCE THE SECOND WORLD WAR, AND IT'S SALE PRICE OF 560,000 GUINEAS (OR GBP588,000) WAS ALMOST TWICE AS HIGH AS ANY MODERN PAINTING HAS FETCHED IN THE SALEROOM.

IT WAS PUT UP FOR SALE BY THE REVEREND THEODORE PITCAIRN AND THE BENEFICIA FOUNDATION, BOTH OF BRYN ATHYN, PENNSYLVANIA, IN THE UNITED STATES. MR. PITCAIRN BOUGHT THE PAINTING IN 1926 FOR 11,000 DOLLARS.

MONET IS SAID TO HAVE ORIGINALLY SOLD "TERRASSE A SAINTE ADRESSE" AFTER PAINTING IT AROUND 1867, FOR 400 FRANCS, HE PAINTED IT AT A TIME WHEN FINANCIAL DISTRESS FORCED HIM TO SEEK HIS FATHER AND AUNT, EACH OF WHOM HAD A HOUSE AT SAINTE ADRESSE, NEAR LE HAVRE, IN NORTH FRANCE.

IT IS NOT CERTAIN AT WHICH HOUSE IT WAS PAINTED, BUT ONE OF THE SEATED FIGURES HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO BE THE ARTIST'S FATHER. IT IS DESCRIBED AS A DARING COMPOSITION WHICH BLENDS LIVELY DOMESTICITY, SOPHISTICATED SOCIAL STUDY AND SEASCAPE.
