  • Description

Australian Anders Wangel kippered his way to victory in the world 420-class yachting championships in his home waters on Monday (9 January).

A stiff 25-miles-per-hour breeze made for lively racing on the course off Brighton, South Australia, when the fifth and final heat was raced.

Wangel came second to fellow-Australian Peter Sievewright, but added to his previous points, the placing gave him the championship to add to the single-handed world title he already held.

Eleven nations took part in the championship - Australia, Belgium, Britain, France, West Germany, Israel, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. In the final heat, Australian boats took the first seven places, with Jean Chaussade (France). Gian Noldin (Switzerland), Sadi Claeys (Belgium) and Mats Berglund (Sweden) chasing them across the line.
