SCUFFLES BETWEEN POLICE AND MARCHERS PROTESTING AGAINST RHODESIA'S U.D.I. BROKE OUT IN WHITEHALL THIS AFTERNOON?

  • Description

SCUFFLES BETWEEN POLICE AND MARCHERS PROTESTING AGAINST RHODESIA'S U.D.I. BROKE OUT IN WHITEHALL THIS AFTERNOON (SUNDAY) DURING A DEMONSTRATION ORGANISED BY THE MOVEMENT FOR COLONIAL FREEDOM. THE MARCHERS ATTEMPTED TO TURN FROM WHITEHALL INTO HORSEGUARDS AVENUE, BUT LINES OF POLICE HELD THEM BACK.

BEFORE THE MARCH, LORD BROCKWAY ADDRESSED A RALLY IN HYDE PARK DURING WHICH HE WARNED THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S SANCTIONS WERE NOT ENOUGH WITHOUT A RESTRICTION ON OIL. THEN, PART OF THE AUDIENCE - AMONG THEM MANY AFRICANS - MARCHED TOWARDS WHITEHALL, SHOUTING THE SLOGAN 'SMITH MUST GO' S THEY WENT.

A SECTION OF THIS GROUP BROKE AWAY TO GO TO DOWNING STREET, WHERE LORD BROCKWAY HANDED IN A LETTER OFFERING WHOLEHEARTED SUPPORT OF THE MOVEMENT FOR THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY. THE OTHER TRIED TO ENTER HORSEGUARDS AVENUE, BUT ALTHOUGH POLICE ACTION STOPPED THEM, IT DID NOT HALT THEIR ANTI-SMITH SLOGAN.
