  • Description

Thousands of people lined the sun-drenched pavements of Johannesburg, South Africa, April 30, to watch the biggest Mardi Gras carnival procession ever seen in the 74-year-old 'capital' of the Rand. Governor-General Swart and Opposition leader, Sir de Villiers Graaf, stood with other officials to watch the one-and-a-half mile long procession of gaily decorated floats parade past the City Hall.

Part of the City's Union Festival, the 2,000 strong procession, with its many bands of musicians, wedding cake floats, grotesque Mardi Gras heads, and glamour girls, jigged along the three-mile route from Joubert Part to the Zoo Lake where a jazzy yet sumptuous Carnival Village has grown during the seven-day celebrations on the occasion of the Union of South Africa's Golden Jubilee...it was founded in 1910.
