Gymnastics -- the world championships are currently taking place in Fort Worth, Texas. One of the events which attracted much attention was the ladies' compulsory exercises and here, the most famous girl gymnast in the world today, Nadia Comaneci of Romania, displays her world-beating standards.
SYNOPSIS: Although no longer the little girl she was in Montreal when she won the Olympic title, Comaneci soon showed she had not lost any of her former grace. Her performance on the uneven bars earned her an astonishing score of 9-point-95. It was on these bars that she scored four perfect full ten points at Montreal.
In the floor exercises, eighteen-year-old Comaneci fell slightly below her own high standard, scoring just 9-point-8. It was still enough, though, to give her an overall total of 39-point-50 and the lead.
Romanian teammate Emilia Eberle, three years younger than Comaneci, also scored highly, and at the end of the compulsory exercises was placed second with 38-point-95. She is widely tipped to be Comaneci's successor.
This year, for the first time since 1962, China was taking part in the world championships. One of their top competitors was young Sihua Zheng, competing here on the beam. She soon became a firm favourite with the crowd, helping the Chinese team to fourth place in the overall team scores, behind Romania and the U.S. However, with the Soviet and East Germany still to complete their programmes, the Chinese were expected to fall further behind. Even with the attraction of Comaneci and the Chinese, though, the championships failed to attract capacity crowds -- a disappointment to the organisers, who had brought the championships to the U.S. for the first time ever.
