  • Description

About 7,000 students and young people marched through Rome on Tuesday, 15th December, waving red flags and anarchist banners in a general protest against the government and against the Franco Regime in Spain.

In Italy they were demanding reforms in health, housing, taxation, public transport and regional development. They were also protesting against the trial of Basque nationalists in Spain.

The demonstration coincided with strikes called across half the nation to press for social reforms. Most of the demonstrations were peaceful, unlike those last Saturday (12 December) when a student demonstrator was killed in Milan. In Rome on Tuesday some demonstrators pelted a priest who hauled down a red flag from the gates of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. But the priest was not seriously hurt.
