  • Description

Skiing is not a sport for which Argentina is well-known -- and the results in the 37th Argentine Ski Championships reflect the overseas domination of the contest. In the downhill event held last Saturday (19 August), for example, the first five places were taken by Italians.

SYNOPSIS: The championships were held in the Argentine ski capital, Bariloche, before appreciative spectators. But if they came in hope of seeing local skiers take the prizes they were to be disappointed. Mikio Katagiri, from Japan, was one of the many overseas skiers who came to the championships. In the downhill event he took sixth place. Italy's Giacomo Anghileri fought hard to better Katagiri's time, but he was a fifth of a second slower and finished in seventh position. The highest place Argentine skier was Carlos Martinez, who finished ninth.

Another visiting skier was Kurt Hansen from the United States.

But it was left to the Italian contingent to take the top honours -- the event was won by Guiliano Giardini in a time of one minute, 30 point 3.9 seconds.
