  • Description

Each year the festival of Phra Chedi Klang Nam, one of the most colourful occasions on Thailand's calendar, reaches a spectacular climax with boat races at Paknam, south of Bangkok.

Traditionally, the festival is a deeply religious occasion, but the beat-racing and parade of festival queens have become a popular entertainment for thousands of Thais and tourists.

Participating boatmen train hard throughout the year for the racing. A high standard of balance and co-ordination is required to keep the flimsy craft stable at speed. For the winners, there are cash prizes ... and traditionally, the good luck of The Gods for the rest of the year.
