The new N.C.B. Rescue Station at Mansfield Woodhouse which has been built at a cost?

  • Description

The new N.C.B. Rescue Station at Mansfield Woodhouse which has been built at a cost of about GBP80,000, is the first to be erected in Britain for 27 years. it replaces buildings erected 50 years ago which had become in recent years quite unsuitable as an operational base for rescue work in this important mining area.

The new building, built in five sections as a precaution against mining subsidence, incorporates a control room; garage for the rescue vehicles, a messroom and TV-equipped recreation room; laboratory, workshop and apparatus-servicing room; an aviary containing canaries; bathing facilities, office accommodation, and, below the building itself, 500 feet of training galleries in which underground conditions can be simulated.

The Mansfield Woodhouse Rescue Brigade turns out for all emergency calls in North Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, and covers directly 25 collieries in East Midlands Division, i.e. all pits in No. 3 (Edwinstowe) Area; the bulk of those in No. 4 (Huthwaite) Area, and Langwith and Creswell in No. 1 Area. Permanent personnel comprise three officers and twelve men, including three men to operate the Division's emergency mobile winding engine.

In addition, the collieries covered by the Station have on their books 167 fully-trained rescue workers who may be called upon at any time in the event of an emergency. These men come to the Station on a rota basis to carry out their statutory training practices in the galleries.

In East Midlands Division as a whole there are 590 workmen and deputies trained in rescue work and four central rescue station, including Mansfield Woodhouse. The other stations are at Chesterfield, Ilkeston and Ashby.

All are equipped with VHF radio which is used to maintain contact with rescue vans when an emergency occurs.

The Manager of the Central Rescue Stations in East Midlands Division is Mr. A.J.G. Coulshed, (whose office is at Mansfield Woodhouse), and Mr. F.N. Quinn, is the Superintendent of the Mansfield Woodhouse Rescue Station.
