    British Foreign Secretary James Callaghan flew into Zambia's capital, Lusaka, on Tuesday (31 December) for talks with Zambian leaders and possibly, Rhodesian nationalist leaders on the future of Rhodesia.

    Mr Callaghan said on arrival at Lusaka he was looking forward to the talks "In an effort to save Rhodesia from itself". He stressed his Government accepted its responsibilities towards Rhodesia, which unilaterally declared its independence from Britain nine years ago. He was looking forward to talks with leaders of the African National Council.

    Zambia's Foreign Minister Vernon Mwaanga, met him at the airport. Zambia was the start of Mr Callaghan's six-nation tour of Africa, which will also include Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria.
