  • Description

    M. Paul-Henri Spaak, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, met President Eisenhower and US Secretary of State, Christian Herter at the White House Washington, Nov. 24, for talks lasting 45 minutes.

In Washington for a meeting of representatives of NATO nations, M. Spaak was accompanied by Randolph Burgess, American Permanent Representative to NATO.

Little detail of the Spaak-Eisenhower conference is known - but many matters up for consideration at the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting next month in Paris, were reviewed.

"We are trying to see just what the situation is", M. Spaak told reporters as he left the White House.

One subject on the agenda for the Paris meeting: the possibility of a reduction in American military strength in Europe. Last week, US Secretary of Defence, Neil McElroy, indicated that eventually a reduction will have to be considered. But he added there were no plans for any immediate reduction.

President Eisenhower flew back to Washington from Augusta to meet M. Spaak. Between now and Dec. 3 when he begins his flying tour of 11 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, the President faces a busy schedule or domestic and international problems.
