  • Description

In Italy, thirteen people were killed on Tuesday (10 July) when two high speed trains collided south of Naples. the trains were carrying commuters between two towns at the time of the collision.

SYNOPSIS; The trains were travelling on the Circum-Vesuviano Railway which serves the Naples area. The crash occurred between the stations of Cercola and Pollena Trocchia. The impact of the crash caused one train to ride up over the other, trapping many people. Oxy-acetylene torches had to be used in the rescue operation.

Both trains had been travelling on a stretch of single track and one of them had apparently left a station, where there were two tracks, under the impression that the line ahead was clear. Several coaches were derailed and were wrenched out of shape. It took several hours for firemen and police to release some of the passengers.

Some trapped passengers did not survive to make the journey to the nearest hospitals. Many ambulances were summoned to transport the survivors while the rescue workers continued to sift through the wreckage.

The Italian Transport Minister ordered an immediate inquiry into the collision but railway spokesmen said human error was almost certainly involved. The driver of one of the trains survived. Sixty-three people remain in hospital--some critically injured.
