AMERICAN RUNNER MAL WHITMAN, WHO HAS HELD 18 WORLD TITLES, ARRIVED IN TANZANIA LAST WEEK TO CONDUCT A FIVE-DAY ATHLETES' TRAINING CAMP AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, DAR-ES-SALAAM. SELECTED ATHLETES FROM ALL PARTS OF TANZANIA HAVE BEEN ATTENDING THE COURSE.

WHITMAN FORECASTS A GREAT FUTURE FOR SPORTS IN TANZANIA AND AFRICA AS A WHOLE. HE SAYS TANZANIA STANDS A VERY GOOD CHANCE OF HAVING A REPRESENTATIVE TEAM AT THE 1968 OLYMPICS.

BUT HE STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF ORGANISING AN EFFECTIVE TRAINING PROGRAMME TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE. "IT MAY TAKE SOME TIME, BUT THE EMPHASIS SHOULD BE ON LEADERSHIP AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORT," HE SAYS. "THE COUNTRY (TANZANIA) HAS AS BRIGHT A FUTURE AS ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD."
