AASEN: "Our immediate concern is to raise the fourteen million Kwachas (eighteen million) needed to rebuild bridges damaged during these attacks. For that reason, the committee adopted already this afternoon a report which is being sent to the President of the Security Council. He will transmit the report, along with the strong appeal by the Committee to all United Nations member states and to all members of international organisations, urging them to provide immediate assistance to Zambia. It is a matter of satisfaction to the Committee's earlier appeals are already forthcoming. The Committee intends to deal with all aspects of its mandates in a final report, which will be submitted to the Security Council by the end the January next."

Background: A United Nations mission investigating the damage inflicted by Rhodesian forces on Zambian road and rail bridges, has called for immediate international help for Zambia. The mission was set up by the Security Council on the twenty third of November after Zambian Ambassador, Mr. Paul Lusaka, called for full compensation for the damage. Food supplies in Zambia -- where Joshua Nkomo's Patriotic Front guerrillas are based -- have been severely restricted since the November attacks. Twelve vital bridges were blown up by Rhodesian forces and, according to the Zambian government, it now has to export its minerals by air at increased cost. The government says the Tanzania-Zambia Railway has been losing more than ninety thousand dollars a day.

SYNOPSIS: Head of the U.N. Mission Norwegian delegate Mr. Per Aasen, reported on the group's investigation.
