Background: AS DRIVERS IN THIS YEAR'S MONTE CARLO RALLY SETTLED DOWN TO THEIR SECOND NIGHT OF NON-STOP DRIVING THEY WERE BEING DESCRIBED AS "SURVIVORS" RATHER THAN "COMPETITORS" AS BLIZZARDS AND ICY ROADS, COUPLED WITH DEEP SNOWDRIFTS, TOOK A HEAVY TOLL.TONIGHT (SUNDAY) MORE THAN 50 CARS HAD DROPPED OUT OF THE RALLY AND REPORTS CAME EVERY HOUR OF THE REMAINDER OF THE 296 STARTERS ENCOUNTERING SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS.

ALL 13 OF THE CREWS FROM ATHENS - ONE OF THE EIGHT EUROPEAN STARTING POINTS - WERE ELIMINATED AS EARLY AS SOUTHERN YUGOSLAVIA BY SNOWDRIFTS UP TO SIX FEET DEEP.THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE RALLY BEGAN IN 1911 THAT A COMPLETE CONTINGENT HAD BEEN ELIMINATED.

ANOTHER MASS "WIPE-OUT" CAME NEAR MONTAUBAN, SOUTHWEST FRANCE, WHERE 15 OF THE CARS THAT SET OUT FROM MONTE CARLO WERE FORCED OUT AFTER TWO CARS HAD SKIDDED ACROSS A ROAD ON AN INCLINE, FORMING A BARRIER.IT TOOK THREE HOURS BEFORE CARS COULD PASS BUT 15 COULD NOT GET TO THE NEXT CONTROL POINT IN TIME TO AVOID DISQUALIFICATION.

WITH ABOUT 35 HOURS ALMOST CONTINUOUS DRIVING AHEAD OF THEM BEFORE THEY COMPLETE THE 2,500 MILE (4,000 KILOMETRES) JOURNEY TO MONTE CARLO, IT SEEMED TONIGHT THAT THOSE WHO STARTED FROM STOCKHOLM, GLASGOW, PARIS, WARSAW AND LISBON HAD PICKED THE "BEST" ROUTE.

FOR THE 75 COMPETITORS FROM STOCKHOLM, A SHORT FERRY TRIP ACROSS THE NARROW STRIP OF SEA SEPARATING SWEDEN AND DENMARK, PROVIDED A WELCOME REST.TONIGHT 72 OF THEM PASSED THROUGH FRANKFURT, GERMANY, CONTROL POINT AND ONLY FIVE OF THEM HAD INCURRED PENALTY POINTS.

AMONG THOSE WITH A "CLEAN SHEET" WAS ERIK CARLSSON OF SWEDEN, DRIVING A SAAB, WHO IS STRONGLY FAVOURED TO WIN THE RALLY FOR THE SECOND SUCCESSIVE YEAR.
