    PRESIDENT TUBMAN OF LIBERIA, WHILE ON HIS WAY TO THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC IN THE FRENCH SHIP "PIERRE MOTI" PAID AN INFORMAL VISIT TO MOMBASA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). ON HIS RETURN VOYAGE NEXT MONTH HE'LL SPEND FOUR DAYS IN KENYA ON A STATE VISIT.

    HE WAS OFFICIALLY WELCOMED BY MR. MURUMBI AND OTHER OFFICIALS REPRESENTING THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT. THE INFORMAL CEREMONY TOOK PLACE IN THE SHIP'S FIRST CLASS LOUNGE.

    ALSO IN THE WELCOMING PARTY WERE THE PRESIDENT OF THE COAST REGIONAL ASSEMBLY, MR. NGALA, AND THE MAYOR OF MOMBASA, MR. KOMBO.

    IN HIS WELCOMING SPEECH, MR. MURUMBI SAID PEOPLE REMEMBERED WITH PRIDE THE ROLE THAT PRESIDENT TUBMAN HAD LONG PLAYED IN AFRICAN AFFAIRS. AND HE RECALLED THAT UNTIL RECENTLY ETHIOPIA AND LIBERIA HAD BEEN THE ONLY INDEPENDENT COUNTRIES IN AFRICA. NOW THERE ARE THIRTY-FOUR.

    REPLYING, PRESIDENT TUBMAN SPOKE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ORGANISATION FOR AFRICAN UNITY (OAU). HE SAID THE ORGANISATION WAS STILL A FLEDGLING - BUT IT WOULD SOON HAVE FEATHERS.
