    SEVERAL HUNDRED STEEL-HELMETED POLICE, ARMED WITH RIFLES, GUARDED THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN PARIS TONIGHT (TUESDAY) AS AN ESTIMATED 14-THOUSAND PEOPLE MARCHED THROUGH THE FRENCH CAPITAL DEMONSTRATING AGAINST THE VIETNAM WAR.

    THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY NINE FRENCH LEFT WING ORGANISATIONS, INCLUDING THE COMMUNIST PARTY. THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED TO THE PLACE DE LA BASTILLE, WHERE THE EMBASSY IS SITUATED. THEY CHANTED SLOGANS, AND ACCUSED PRESIDENT JOHNSON OF BEING AN ASSASSIN.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PREVENTED FROM ASSEMBLYING OUTSIDE THE EMBASSY. THE PARADE LASTED 90 MINUTES, AND THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL LARGE DEMONSTRATIONS IN FRANCE PROTESTING AGAINST UNITED STATES INVOLVEMENT IN THE VIETNAM SITUATION.
