Background: Tottenham Hotspur kept among the leaders in the English Football League Division One with a comfortable 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion in London on Saturday (21 November).

Spurs were rarely troubled by their Midland visitors but made little impression themselves until centre-half Make England drove home their first goal in the last minute of the first half.

After 61 minutes, Gould equalised for West Bromwich -- but within minutes Albion lost striker Jeff Astle through injury and Gilzean grabbed spurs' second goal. Gilzean added a third and minutes before the final whistle Brown notched a consolation goal for the struggling visitors.

SYNOPSIS: At White Hart Lane, London, Tottenham Hotspur moved straight into the attack in Saturday's Division One match against West Bromwich Albion.

Spurs -- among the leading contenders for the League title -- only struck their rhythm sporadically in a scrappy first half.

And, it was only seconds before the half time-whistle that centre-half Mike England cracked in their first goal
Albion resumed in more aggressive style launching a series of brisk breaks from defence. And after 61 minutes they equalised when Gould rapped home a badly misjudged back-pass.

But a few minutes later the Midlanders lost their striker Jeff Astle--carried off through injury.

After 67 minutes Spurs took a 2-1 lead when Scottish international Alan Gilzean netted from a goalmouth scramble.

Gilzean again -- this time heading home the Londoner's third goal with the Midlander's defence spreadeagled by a right-wing cross.

In the dying seconds of the game Albion notched a consolation goal through Tony Brown. Spurs finally ran out victors by three goals to two.
