    The 31st Anniversary of the United Nations on Sunday (24 October) was observed in a colourful ceremony in the Ghanaian capital of Accra.

    SYNOPSIS: Ghana's Foreign Affairs Commissioner, Colonel Roger Felli, and the United Nations Development programme Representative in Ghana, Mr. Grigorio Feliciano, inspected a guard appropriate to the day. It was made up from the contingent of Ghanian soldiers who had served in the United Nations Emergency Forces in the Middle East. They wore their United Nations' uniforms for the ceremony, which was held in Accra's Independence Gardens.

    Watched by members of the ruling National Redemption Council and members of the Diplomatic Corps, the Ghanaian and United Nations flags were raised. After the United Nations Development Programme Representative, Mr. Feliciano, road a message from the United Nation's Secretary General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Colonel Felli, called on member countries of the United Nations to dedicate themselves to the ideals and objectives of the Organisation's charter. Colonel Felli said that despite the triumph and advances of the Organisation the world was still plagued by ideological, racial and religious bigotries.

    Colonel Felli said these bigotries had brought society and civilisation to the brink of nuclear holocaust. He urged member nations to renew their pledge to the world body.
