Britain's Chief Common Market negotiator, Mr. Geoffrey Rippon, put forward new compromise proposals on British?

  • Description

Britain's Chief Common Market negotiator, Mr. Geoffrey Rippon, put forward new compromise proposals on British entry to the Common Market at a meeting with Foreign Ministers of the European Economic Community in Brussels toady (Tuesday, December 8). He said later that he thought there had been a positive response. Mr. Rippon withdraw earlier British proposals for the time Britain should take to adapt to the farm and industry sides of the E.E.C. He then moved closer to the E.E.C. view by suggesting that both aspects should be completed within five years, instead of six years for agriculture and three for industry, as earlier proposed.

After meeting separately for more than two hours, the Foreign Ministers of the Six said they had noted Britain's new proposals with satisfaction. But the chairman of the meeting, Herr Walter Scheel of West Germany, said serious problems remained.

Mr. Rippon then told the Community's negotiations that this statement was unsatisfactory as it did not alow deputy negotiators to start work right away on the detailed transitional measures to be included in the five-year period.

The E.E.C. representatives went away for another private session and on their return agreed to ta a compromise formula stating that deputy negotiators would remain charged with continuing discussions on all problems in view of the next Ministerial session scheduled for February 2.

Afterwards Mr. Rippon quoted Herr Scheel as saying that negotiations were proceeding at a "spanking pace".
