THE FIRST ANZACS FOUGHT AT GALLIPOLI BECAUSE TURKEY WAS ALLIED TO GERMANY AND RUSSIA. HAD ASKED BRITISH AND FRENCH HELP. THE ALLIED COMMAND, WITH WINSTON CHURCHILL'S ENTHUSIASTIC BACKING, CHOSE TWO ANZAC DIVISIONS, TWO BRITISH DIVISIONS AND A FRENCH BRIGADE TO DRIVE THE TURKS OFF GALLIPOLI AND OPEN THE DARDANELLES AND THE BLACK SEA ROUTE TO RUSSIA.

AT THE KANCHANABURI CEMETERY, NORTHEAST OF BANGKOK LIE THE BODIES OF THOUSANDS OF COMMONWEALTH SERVICEMEN AND CIVILIANS WHO DIED DURING THE JAPANESE INVASION OF BURMA, THAILAND AND MALAYA IN 1942.

SOME OF THE MEN DIED ON THE BATTLEFIELD WHILE OTHERS MET THEIR FATE BUILDING THE BURMA-THAI RAILWAY AND IN THE PRISON CAMPS OF THE RIVER KWAI.
