  • Description

AN IMPORTANT EXHIBITION OPENED THIS WEEK AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN NEW YORK. IT FEATURES THE WORK OF TWO LEADING AMERICAN NEGRO ARTISTS, ROMARE BEARDEN AND RICHARD HUNT. RECENTLY POLITICAL PRESSURE HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO BEAR ON A NUMBER OF MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES BY GROUPS OF MILITANT BLACK ARTISTS TO SHOW NEGRO ART. THE DECISION TO MOUNT THIS EXHIBITION IS PARTLY A REACTION TO THIS PRESSURE, BUT IN ITS DEFENCE, THE MUSEUM POINTS OUT THAT IT ACQUIRED ITS FIRST BEARDEN WORK IN 1945 AND ITS FIRST HUNT IN 1957, WHEN ITS CHOICE WAS NOT INFLUENCED BY POLITICAL CONSIDERATIONS.

ROMARE BEARDEN, A PAINTER WHO WORKS IN COLLAGE, WAS BORN IN NORTH CAROLINA IN 1914. RICHARD HUNT, WHO CREATES SCULPTURE FROM SCRAP MATERIALS, WAS BORN IN CHICAGO IN 1935.
