  • Description

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY LED FROM START TO FINISH TO WIN THEIR THIRD SUCCESSIVE BOAT RACE AGAINST OXFORD IN THEIR ANNUAL RACE ON THE RIVER THAMES (SATURDAY). IT WAS THE 116TH RACE IN THE SERIES.

CAMBRIDGE'S VICTORY IN A WINDY, RAIN SWEPT CONTEST GAVE THEM THEIR 64TH WIN OF THE SERIES. OXFORD HAVE WON 51 TIMES AND THERE'S BEEN ONE DEADHEAT.

CAMBRIDGE WON THE TOSS AND ELECTED TO ROW ON THE SURREY STATION FROM WHICH THE WINNERS OF THE LAST EIGHT RACES HAD ALSO STARTED. IT WAS THEIR EFFICIENCY IN THE FIRST 20 STROKES WHICH GAINED THEM THE RACE. THEY WERE AWAY CLEANLY, PULLING 40 STROKES IN THE FIRST MINUTE WHILE OXFORD MADE A SHAKY START WITH THEIR STROKE TWICE ALMOST CATCHING A CRAB IN THE FIRST MINUTE.

OXFORD MADE A TREMENDOUS CHALLENGE APPROACHING THE END OF THE SECOND MILE IN AN ATTEMPT TO SNATCH THE SURREY STATION AND ALMOST TOUCHED THE CAMBRIDGE BOAT. THEIR EFFORT FAILED, AND FROM THEN ON CAMBRIDGE WERE ALWAYS GOING LIKE WINNERS.

THEIR MARGIN OF VICTORY AT THE END OF THE FOUR AND A QUARTER MILES COURSE WAS JUST OVER THREE LENGTHS.
