    TODAY (WEDNESDAY) IS GENERAL ELECTION DAY IN GHANA, BUT NO GHANAIANS ARE GOING TO THE POLLS. ALL 198 CANDIDATES PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT KWAME NKRUMAH, LEADER OF THE CONVENTION PEOPLE'S PARTY IN THIS ONE-PARTY STATE, WERE UNOPPOSED WHEN NOMINATIONS CLOSED ON JUNE 1. TODAY THERE WILL BE ONLY THE FORMALITY OF DECLARING THEM ELECTED.

    ALTHOUGH THERE ARE NO CONTESTS, THE ELECTION IS AN OCCASION FOR POLITICAL FERVOUR AND MANY MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO THE ELECTORATE AT MASS RALLIES, WHERE PARTY BANNERS ARE RAISED AND SPEECHES MADE IN HONOUR OF THE NEW PARLIAMENTARIANS.

    TOMORROW, DR NKRUMAH HIMSELF WILL BE RE-ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC FOR A FURTHER FIVE YEARS WHEN THE NEW NATIONAL ASSEMBLY HOLDS ITS FIRST MEETING.

    THE FIRST GHANAIAN PARLIAMENT CONTAINED 114 MEMBERS, BUT HAS NOW BEEN STRENGTHENED WITH THE ADDITION OF DIPLOMATS, TRADE UNIONISTS, TEACHERS AND JOURNALISTS.

    THE PARTY WILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO UNSEAT ANY MEMBERS WHO LOSES ITS CONFIDENCE. AMONG THE CANDIDATES THIS TIME IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY, MR ALEX QUAISON-SACKEY, AND GHANA'S HIGH COMMISSIONER IN LONDON, MR KWESI ARMAH.
