  • Description

Cardinal Paolo Bertoli, special envoy of Pope Paul, arrived in Beirut on Sunday (9 November), to stress the Vatican's opposition to any division of Lebanon between Christians and Moslems as a means of ending the country's months of civil strife.

His arrival came at a time when the violence, which had claimed thousands of lives had died down, though the capital still buzzed with rumours off its possible renewal.

Cardinal Bertoli met the country's Premier, Rashid Karami, who shortly before had suggested compromise proposals to end the factional conflict. He had also promised to submit a working document to the nation for discussion.

Cardinal Bertoli also handed a message from Pope Paul to the country's President, Suleiman Franjieh, stressing the Papacy's opposition to any partition of Lebanon between Christians and Moslems
He also met other cabinet ministers.
