Background: INTRODUCTION King hussein of Jordan laid to rest his young wife, Queen Alia, at a simple but moving ceremony in Amman on Thursday (10 February). The 28 year-old Queen had been killed in a helicopter crash the previous day.
SYNOPSIS: Queen Alia became the King's third wife in 1972, and in 1975 they had a son, who was christened Ali. He is the King's only child who is eligible to succeed his father to the Hashemite crown. The couple's other child, a daughter, is now two years-old. Queen Alia came from a Palestinian family in Nablus, which is now in the Israeli occupied West bank of Jordan.
The tragedy happened as the Queen was returning from Tafileh, a hill town overlooking the Dead Sea. She had been visiting a hospital after reading a complaint about it in the newspapers. In accordance with Moslem tradition, the funeral took place the following day, Wednesday. From a mosque where a prayer ceremony was held, the coffin was drawn on a gun-carriage, slowly past ranks of saluting soldiers to the Hashimiyeh Palace where the Queen was to be buried.
