INDIA AND INDONESIA ARE TO EXCHANGE MILITARY OFFICERS FOR TRAINING. THIS WAS AGREED ON IN TALKS IN DJAKARTA ON WEDNESDAY (JANUARY 18) BETWEEN THE INDIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, MOHAMMED ALI CHAGLA, AND INDONESIA'S ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF, GENERAL SUHARTO.

GENERAL SUHARTO ACCEPTED AN INVITATION TO VISIT INDIA - BUT NO DATE HAS BEEN SET.

MR. CHAGLA IS IN INDONESIA AT THE INVITATION OF THE FOREIGN MINISTER, ADAM MALIK, WHO VISITED INDIA IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR TO IMPROVE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS.

AFTER TALKING TO GENERAL SUHARTO, MR. CHAGLA CALLED ON PRESIDENT SUKARNO AT THE MERDEKA PALACE. MR. MALIK ALSO ATTENDED.

LATER THE PRESIDENT SAID HE WAS ANGRY AT TUESDAY'S (JANUARY 17) SUGGESTION BY MR. MALIK THAT HE SHOULD STEP ASIDE FROM THE PRESIDENCY AND APPOINT SOMEONE ELSE. TURNING TO MR. MALIK, PRESIDENT SUKARNO ADDED WITH A SMILE: "I AM ANGRY BECAUSE I LIKE HIM".

ON TUESDAY, MR. MALIK SAID HE HAD ASKED THE PRESIDENT "AS A COMRADE IN ARMS FOR DECADES" TO FREE HIMSELF OF PAST MISTAKES AND, IF NECESSARY, VOLUNTARILY STEP DOWN AND APPOINT SOMEONE ELSE TO THE PRESIDENCY UNTIL GENERAL ELECTIONS - DUE NEXT YEAR.
