  • Description

Britain's greatest living statesman, and probably the world's outstanding personality, Sir Winston Churchill, celebrated his 85th birthday quietly at his Hyde Park Gate, London, home Nov 30.

After an informal luncheon, the great man left for the House of Commons. As he entered the Chamber, members on both sides stood and cheered. Then he made his first speech since resigning as Premier in 1955.

The customary celebratory luncheon party for his grandchildren was dispensed with this year, as most were away at school. Instead there will be a family dinner for about twenty people.

Messages of congratulation have been pouring into London from all parts of the world. Among the first to arrive were those from President Eisenhower and British Premier Macmillan.
