  • Description

A gymnastic tournament took place in Taipei, capital of Taiwan, recently between teams from Japan, Taiwan and South Africa.

SYNOPSIS: It was an invitation tournament and each country's team included athletes who are prominent in international gymnastics. Among the South African gymnasts was their national all-round champion, Alwyn Gerber, who was later to give a superb performance on the rings.

The tournament was watched by about a thousand spectators, and one of the most remarkable performances they saw was given by 23-year-old Ben Van Zyl of South Africa, a handicapped athlete who was born with only one leg. He takes part in various sports, and finds no difficulty in doing the balancing exercises in gymnastics.

The start performer of the event was Eizo Kenmotsu of Japan, who gave a supremely confident display on the pommel horse. Kenmotsu was Japan's silver medallist in the pommel horse section at the recent Olympic Games in Montreal. After this immaculate display, he emerged as the highest scorer in the tournament with a mark of 9 point 70. No other competitor could approach anywhere near his standard.

In the women's section on the horizontal bars, the Japanese were also predominant. Once again many of the Japanese girls taking part had competed at the Montreal Olympics. In the women's floor exercises, however, the Taiwan girls provided the Japanese with stiff opposition, and Taiwan's Lin Tien-Yue was awarded the prize for the best individual performance having scored 8 point 80. The South African champion, Alwyn Gerber, won the rings section with a score of 8 point 30.
