Fears of widespread political turmoil were revived in Argentina following the murder of left wing parliamentary Deputy Rudolfo Ortega Pena in Buenos Aires on Wednesday (July 31). Since the death of President Juan Peron, there have been a number of deaths among the nation's top officials either through natural causes or bullets.
Mr. Pena was gunned down on a pedestrian crossing as he left his home in the centre of the city. His wife was slightly wounded.
The funeral took place on Friday (August 2). Demonstrations by left wing supporters of Mr. Pena followed the burial. Police arrested 315 and they were kept in jail overnight for questioning.
Significantly left wing groups were the only ones which didn't support President Maria Peon during a recent "consolidation" conference encompassing all of the country's political structures.
SYNOPSIS: There's been another political killing in Buenos Aires. On Wednesday night, left-wing Parliamentary Deputy Rudolfo Pena left his home in the centre of the Argentine capital and was machine gunned as he crossed a pedestrian crossing. His wife was slightly wounded in the attack.
The killing made headlines in the city and on Friday when mourners led by Mrs. Pena gathered to pay their respects, trouble began in the capital. Mr. Pena's death came only two weeks after the assassination of Mr. Arturo Roig, a former Minister of the Interior.

He made his name among left wingers in Argentina when in 1972 he defended 16 guerrillas killed while in detention at the southern naval base of Trelew. He claimed the guerrillas were killed in cold blood when the official version said they were shot trying to escape.
