  • Description

Pope Paul celebrated Easter Sunday at the Vatican City on Easter Sunday with a denouncement of "hedonism" before a crowd of 200,000, in St, Peter's Square.

The Pope, spiritual leader of more than 600 million Roman Catholics around the world, called hedonism "the false gospel of so many men and women of our time", that in the long run was "the philosophy of illusion and death". What Easter represented, he declared, was man's victory over death.

The speech, from the balcony high up over the Square, was in contrast to preceding years when the Pope's traditional message has usually been a call for peace and an end to bloodshed.

After the speech, the Pope addressed his Easter greetings to the world in twelve languages including Russian, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean. Finally he conferred hiss blessing on the world's Catholics. The crowd gave him a huge ovation, clapping and waving little yellow and white Vatican flags.

The ceremony was broadcast to an audience of more than 400 million in Europe and Latin America.
