38 foreign contestants, from 18 different countries, competed, but as was expected, the Japanese swept the board to take the first, second and third places. The nearest European contestant was France's Bernard Pariset, who gained fourth place.

Some of the more outstanding bouts, filmed by VISNEWS, were those between Dennis Bloss (Great Britain) who defeated J.A. Scholz (West Germany). Yamashiki (Japan) defeating M. Kawakami (Brazil). Holland's six foot eight inch giant A.J. Geesink beating Y. Prok (Cambodia) and A. Kamaniga (Japan) defeating H. Courtine (France).

The all Japanese final between Koji Sone and Akio Kaminaga was particularly highlighted, being refereed by Septagenarian Kyuzo Mifune, Tenth Rank Holder, and a legendary name in the history of Judo.

29 year old Koji Sone, emerged as the final winner and World Champion. Diploma's and Sash's were presented by Prince Takamatsu, brother of the Emperor, and patron of the Championships.
