  • Description

President Anwar Sadat of Egypt denounced Israel's 'arrogance' and described the United States as 'liars, cheaters and deceivers' during a May Day speech addressed to five thousand people in the Alexandria Stadium on Monday (1st May).

The Egyptian President was making his first major speech since returning from talks with Soviet leaders in Moscow last week. The talks resulted in the Soviet Union's strongest support yet for Egypt, and stressed the Soviet Union's preparedness to provide Egypt with increased military aid in its struggle against lsrael. Until the talks, the Soviet Union has advocated a political solution to the problem.

President Sadat promised two days before his departure for Moscow that by April next year Egypt would celebrate the withdrawal of the Israeli forces from the occupied territories.

In his May Day speech, the President said that he would not be content merely with the retaking of the occupied territories. His aim, he said, was to 'put an end to Israeli arrogance'.
