Background: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and other Arab leaders arrived in the Upper Nile City of Aswan yesterday (Thursday) for the official opening of the massive Aswan Dam project. The Soviet Union, which gave aid to complete the Dam, was represented by President Podgorny.
Mr. Podgorny and President and drove into a town thick with flags and slogans celebrating the Egyptian Russian Alliance. The hammer and sickle hung side by side with the Egyptian colours from hotel windows and balconies and huge signs in Arabic, Russian and English welcomed visitors to the opening of the 300 million sterling Nile barrier.
The Dam was completed as a joint Egyptian-Soviet enterprise, ten years after the United States an the World Bank backed out of the project. The opening ceremony today (Friday) will spark of hours of continuous singing and celebrations.
