  • Description

The worst autumn snowstorm on record, a gale-driven blizzard, swept the East Coast of the U.S., Dec 12, immobilising one by one, the big cities from Washington, New York to Boston.

The worst hit areas in New York lay in 17 inches of snow. Many city and suburban trains were out of operation and many of the parkways were closed. Almost all entrance and exits in the metropolitan area parkways were blocked with snow drifts or stalled cars.

The Department of Sanitation immediately started to plough main thoroughfares in Manhattan and the parkways and expressways.

Cars were abandoned by their owners. Shipping and aircraft were paralysed.

The blizzard delayed business at the U.N. headquarters. Most schools and many businesses were closed. Many Civil Service and Government employees were given the day off.

Over 80 deaths were attributed to the state of the weather in the blizzard areas along the Eastern Seabord.
