The Israeli Foreign Minister, Moshe Dayan -- who is on a two-day official visit to France -- met President Giscard d'Estaing on Tuesday (30 January). The ninety-minute meeting, in Paris, focused on the political situation in the Middle East and international efforts to bring about an Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty.
SYNOPSIS: General Dayan met President Giscard at the Elysee Palace. General Dayan, who arrived on Monday (29 January), is the first Israeli Cabinet Minister to come to France since Mr Mena???hem Begin became Prime Minister nearly two years ago. Before meeting President Giscard the Foreign Minister attended a news luncheon in Paris.
At the luncheon General Dayan said there had been too little dialogue between his country and France over the past decade. Relations between the two countries, he said had been cold and reserved.
Earlier General Dayan said he hoped his visit would bring about a greater understanding between France and Israel. After meeting with President Giscard he was asked if he was satisfied with the outcome of their talks.
Mr Dayan returned to Israel on Wednesday (31 January).
