    India's Prime Minister, Mrs. Gandhi, was garlanded with flowers by jubilant Congress Party colleagues on Monday (13 March) when she arrived at Parliament House following the Party's landslide victory in state elections.

    The Parry's greatest success we only just becoming clear as results were counted in the strife-torn state of West Bengal. There, predictions of a close tussle between the Congress Party and the Communists proved astray as Congress candidates won thirty seats to every one gained by the Communists.

    In a speech, Mrs. Gandhi said she hoped her Party would prove itself worthy of the public's confidence.

    Also in New Delhi on Monday -- the opening of the new session of Parliament. When President Giri arrived to open the session he was greeted by Mrs. Gandhi, then walked into the chamber to a fanfare of trumpets.

    In his speech, Mr. Giri said that India wanted friendship with Pakistan and said he hoped the Pakistani Government would accept India's offer of direct talks to settle their problems.

    Mr. Giri also hoped for better relations between India and the United States -- relations tarnished during the India-Pakistan war.

    SYNOPSIS: For India's Prime Minister, Mrs Gandhi, on Monday -- a jubilant welcome from Congress Party colleagues in Parliament. The welcome followed the Congress Party's landslide victory in the state elections. Even as these celebrations were going on, the election count showed overwhelming support for the Party in West Bengal -- the state where the Communists were expected to put up a hard fight.

    President Giri arrived in a horse-drawn carriage. He was to tell Parliament that India wanted friendship with Pakistan. And he hoped the Pakistan Government would accept India's offer of direct talks to settle their problems. President Giri also hoped for better relations with the United States.

    As Prime Minister, Mrs Gandhi greeted President Giri. Before the formal opening ceremony the President shook hands with cabinet ministers and leading Parliamentary figures.

    The ceremony of the opening of parliament was carried out with pomp and dignity.

    One of the first major activities of the new Parliament will be to consider the national budget -- to be published on Thursday.
