  • Description

The United States -- and another presidential primary takes place today (Tuesday). Illinois voters go to the polls to name their favourite Republican Party Presidential candidates.

The two main candidates are Senator Barry Goldwater and Margaret Chase Smith. Both wound up their campaigns in Chicago at the weekend.

Sen. Goldwater was given a thunderous reception when he arrived at a rally of his supporters. He struck out at what he described as the "inclination of some Americans to relax."
He said, to loud cheers: "I didn't enter politics to relax. And I wasn't born to follow the leaders or abandon my conscience. I can't work that way, I can't live that way, and I don't think Americans can, either."
Neither candidate did much campaigning. Mrs. Smith took a quiet, more personalised attitude towards the election. She told a luncheon of advertising women that the United States was a nation "obsessed with the desire to be liked."
Sen. Goldwater is a firm favourite to win, but there could be big write-in votes for non-starters like Henry Cabot Lodge, the U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam and winner of the New Hampshire primary, and ex-Vice-President Richard Nixon.
