  • Description

AFTER FOUR YEARS THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S POLICY OF ECONOMIC SANCTIONS AGAINST RHODESIA TO END HER ILLEGAL INDEPENDENCE HAS CLEARLY FAILED. RECENT INVESTIGATIONS HAVE REVEALED THAT THERE IS A HEALTHY UNDERCOVER TRADE IN TOBACCO, PIG IRON, PETROLEUM PRODUCTS AND OTHER VITAL COMMODITIES INSPITE OF A BRITISH NAVAL "BLOCKADE" OF THE MOZAMBIQUE PORT OF BEIRA, RHODESIA'S OUTLET TO THE SEA.

IN A RECENT BROADCAST PREMIER IAN SMITH SAID THAT THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMY, FAR FROM BEING STRANGLED, WAS EXPANDING. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT GREW BY 13 PER CENT IN 1969 TO A TOTAL OF GBP 465 MILLION.

IT IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT ALTHOUGH THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICIAL SUPPORTS THE SANCTIONS POLICY COMPANIES IN MOST OF ITS MEMBER STATES CONTINUE TO TRADE SECRETLY WITH RHODESIA.

TYPICAL OF THE WAY THE SANCTIONS BUSTERS WORK IS THE CASE OF A GBP 400,000 CONSIGNMENT OF WHISKEY. IT WAS CONSIGNED FROM BRITAIN BROUGHT BY SEA TO THE MOZAMBIQUE PORT OF BEIRA, THEN LOADED ON A TRAIN AND CONSIGNED TO LUSAKA.

WHEN THE TRAIN REACHED UMTAILI, RHODESIA 2,000 CASES WERE OFF LOADED AND THE DOCUMENTS ALTERED TO SHOW THAT THE CONSIGNMENT HAD IN FACT BEEN 2,000 CASES FEWER.

ACCORDING TO ECONOMIC EXPERTS RHODESIANS ARE LEARNING TO DO WITHOUT BRITISH GOODS AND IRONICALLY THE LOSS OF TRADE IS COSTING BRITAIN UP TO GBP100 MILLION A YEAR.
