IN INDIA, ONE OF FORMER PRIME MINISTER INDIRA GANDHI'S CHIEF SUPPORTERS HAS BEEN RELEASED ON BAIL IN NEW DELHI AFTER BEING ARRESTED ON CORRUPTION CHARGES. RAJINDER KUMAR DHAWAN, MRS GANDHI'S PRIVATE SECRETARY, WAS ACCUSED OF MISUSING PARTY FUNDS.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Dhawan was one of 10 supporters of the ex-Prime Minister accused of misusing their positions to collect funds for the Congress Party and siphon them off into fictitious companies. They were the first important arrests to have been made since Prime Minster Moraji Desai's Janata party came into power last March. The arrests came after nationwide house searches.
Nine of the ten had been granted bail before Mr. Dhawan was released on Thursday (18th August). A bail petition by Yashpal Kapoor, a member of Parliament who ran Mrs. Gandhi's 1971 election campaign, was to be heard on Friday.
Mr. Dhawan, seen here leaving court in an open-necked shirt, has been Mrs. Gandhi's private secretary for almost 15 years, and he's a close associate of her son, Sanjay -- a controversial figure in the recent elections.
