  • Description

With the departure of Prince Norodom sihanouk in the March coup of 1970, the republican forces of what was then Cambodia were in a quandry as what to do with the Royal Palace.

The Lon Nol government of the newly named Khmer Republic, spurning suggestions to tear down this vestige of monarchy, recently turned the complex of building into a part of the National Museum.

Although the buildings are not particularly old or historic, it does number a most peculiar gift as part of its heritage. The oldest house in the complex was a present of Napoleon III to Norodom I in 1863. The house was transported, piece by piece, from France.

The last vestige of royalty now associated with the Royal Palace is the home of the Kingdom's last Monarch, Queen Kossamak, the mother of Sihanouk. The National Assembly had been debating the fate of the deposed queen and it expected, shortly, that she will be granted permission to leave the country.

SYNOPSIS: Although not particularly old or historic, the former Royal Palace in Phnom Penh has recently been declared a part of the new Khmer Republic's National Museum.

The Lon Nol government ceased referring to it as Royal immediately following the over-throw of Prince Norodom Sihanouk in March of 1970. Outside, and directly in front of the Palace, the new flag of the Khmer Republic was unveiled in October of 1970.

In what was the Royal Reception Hall, the now National -- rather than Royal -- Ballet troupe practise daily. Although the name has changed, the style of dance remains traditionally Khmer -- as it has for centuries. It is expected that the last member of royalty to be housed in this complex, Sihanouk's mother Queen Kossamak, will shortly be granted permission to leave the Khmer Republic.
