  • Description

A tense and uneasy situation prevails in Luluabourg, Congo Republic, July 21, where the Belgian paratroops are in control of the airport, with Force Publique mutineers in charge of the town,. As yet there have been no clashes between the two forces, with both sides waiting for the United Nations forces to arrive.

On July 21, two British pressmen were arrested by the Congolese troops when they went into the town to take photographs. Later the Belgian commander managed to secure their release. A meeting between the Congolese leader and the Belgian commander resulted in joint patrol by the two forces through the town.

In the airport car park, the cars of the Belgian refugees - some not yet a year old - lie unattended. Several have been put out of action by the fleeing Belgians so they could not be used by the Congolese.
